Godwin's works of 1797, the essay collection The Enquirer and the short piece "Of History and Romance" are exercises in history and biography that point back to his great political and ethical masterpiece of four years earlier, Political Justice. Despite their differing genres, all three works pursue the formative purpose that characterised the philosopher until the end of his literary career. Godwin's assessment of the relevance of the individual for universal history opened innovative channels for nineteenth century biographical writing. On a more personal level, once Godwin realised the mutual intrusiveness of differing genres, he disclosed his awareness of his limitations, as evident in his polemical biography Memoirs of Mary Wollstonecraft (1798). Although heavily criticised at the time, Godwin benefited from this biographical experience, and went on to produce his best historical pieces throughout the 1810s, as well as a number of very fine fictional and philosophical works.
